Hot is not the word I would have used for this contest. The scores reflect the
conditions, and our lack of experience. We came to this contest from another
event. In no way did that effect our submissions. We were not prepared enough
for the heat, nor how it would effect the smokers. I remember on thermometer
reading 175 degree, BEFORE I got the fire started.
Tom and his crew did their best to run a great contest, there were a few folks who
seem to think that they were more important than others, and they let their
displeasure be known. I give Tom a lot of credit, he didn't have to put up with that
garbage, but he calmly got everyone into their sites, and did what he could to
accommodate everyone.
At the cooks meeting I saw the Official Clock had a reading of 127 degrees on it,
and thought to myself "we are in trouble". I told everyone in our group to stay in
the shade and hydrated, that it wasn't worth getting sick over. Sometime during
the night, I was in front of our fan, hoping that the heat would break, but it didn't.
Our results are indicative of our inability to control the heat, both within the
smokers and the weather, so we learned and grow with this experience. We have
some time now to prepare for our stretch run, and for vacation.
